Refugees come to this country fleeing war, persecution and all kinds of hardship. If they’ve spent time in refugee camps along the way, it’s likely they survived on slim rations, even one meal a day. That’s a diet that’s especially hard on kids. But when refugee kids come to this country, they’re faced with the opposite problem – super-sized food portions.
It’s a steep learning curve when it comes to understanding how junk food affects your health, one that Mariama Dolleh faced after she arrived in the United States as a refugee from a camp in Sierra Leone. Here’s her story.
